Our Spirituality - OLSH
Fr. Chevalier promised Mary that if she helped him with the finance and housing necessary to found his little society (the MSC), he would cause her to be honoured in a special way.
Mary did help, and Fr. Chevalier in his turn kept his promise to Mary. He gave her a new name, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. When in 1874, he founded a society of religious women with the same spiritual and apostolic vision as his society of priests and brothers, he called them the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, a title which he envisaged as a way of life.
In almost all of the countries where devotion to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart has been established, she has soon been presented with the features and dress of the new country where she has become known. Some characteristics remain the same however. Jesus is pointing to his heart and to his mother. Mary looks at us and indicates Jesus.
In Australia, many parish churches have a statue of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. The title is not do with Mary’s own heart, but with the Heart of her Son. Hence she is always shown with Jesus, and indicating his heart.
